My Stepmother Said Dad Died of a Contagious Disease, But the Casket Was Tapping
The Sealed Mahogany Box
The air in the parlor of the Willow Creek Funeral Home was heavy with the cloying, sweet scent of white lilies and fresh wax. Dim amber spotlights cast long, skeletal shadows across the velvet walls, centering on the massive, polished wooden casket. Maria stood beside it, an island of cold composure. Her platinum blonde hair was pulled back into a flawless, severe bun, contrasting sharply with her high-necked black turtleneck and tailored skirt. Her eyes were dry, calculating, and fixed on the heavy brass handles of the casket.
Suddenly, the double doors of the parlor burst open. The heavy oak banged against the drywall, shattering the solemn silence. Leo stumbled in, his messy brown hair falling over his forehead, his slim-fit dark suit rumpled from a frantic drive. Tears streamed down his face, his chest heaving with raw, unfiltered grief.
"Dad! Dad! No, please, it can't be true!" Leo cried, his voice cracking as he rushed toward the altar.
But beneath the heavy, sealed lid of the casket, there was no peaceful sleep. In the pitch-black, suffocating narrowness of the wooden box, Arthur lay wide awake. A thick strip of silver duct tape was secured tightly over his mouth, cutting off his screams into muffled, desperate grunts. His wrists and ankles were bound with heavy zip ties. His eyes, wide with absolute terror, stared blindly upward into the darkness as the sound of his son's sobbing voice filtered through the thick mahogany.
Leo collapsed onto the lid, his forehead resting against the polished wood.
"When did all this happen, Maria? I want to see my father one last time. Please, just let me look at him," he sobbed.
Maria’s face hardened. She lunged forward, her hands gripping Leo’s shoulders with surprising, frantic strength.
"No, you can't! It can't be opened," she whispered frantically, her voice trembling with a forced panic. "Your father had a disease, Leo. A very rare, highly contagious disease. The medical examiner ordered it sealed immediately. If you open this, we are all in danger."
”If you open this, we are all in danger."
