Previously: When Leo's wealthy father suddenly passed, his stepmother refused to open the casket, claiming a contagious disease. But a faint tapping from inside revealed a terrifying truth.

The Truth Unleashed

Leo threw the doors open. Maria was standing over the casket, hissing into the wood.

"Shut up in there! It’s almost over!" she whispered fiercely.

She spun around, her face turning pale as she saw Leo standing in the doorway.

"Leo! I thought you were getting water," she stammered, stepping in front of the mahogany box to block his view.

Leo didn't answer. He marched past her, his eyes locked on a heavy brass candelabra standing on a side table. He grabbed the solid metal base.

"Get out of the way, Maria," he growled.

Maria screamed, throwing herself over the casket.

"Are you insane? You'll infect the whole city! I'll call the police!" she shrieked.

Leo shoved her aside with one strong arm and jammed the heavy brass base of the candelabra into the seam of the casket lid. With a desperate, adrenaline-fueled heave, he pried. The heavy lock snapped with a sickening splinter of wood, and the lid swung open.

Leo gasped, stumbling backward. There was no disease. There was only Arthur, his father, bound in plastic zip ties, a thick layer of duct tape sealing his mouth shut, his chest heaving as he fought for oxygen. Leo instantly tore the tape from his father's mouth.

"Leo! She poisoned me! She drugged my tea!" Arthur gasped, coughing violently as Leo sliced the zip ties with a pocketknife. "She was going to bury me alive for the estate!"

Maria turned to flee, but the parlor doors swung open once more. Two police officers, whom Leo had frantically called from his phone while running back from the office, stepped into the room, their weapons drawn. Maria collapsed to her knees, sobbing as the handcuffs clicked around her wrists.

Arthur hugged his son tightly, tears of relief streaming down both their faces. The web of lies Maria had woven to steal the family fortune had unraveled in a single moment of filial love and suspicion. True family bonds can never be buried, for the truth has a way of screaming loudest from the darkest places.
