The Contagious Secret

The living room of the family estate was draped in heavy, oppressive shadows, illuminated only by the flickering, amber glow of memorial candles that cast dancing shapes on the walls. Maria stood motionless beside the closed mahogany casket, her face a mask of grief that didn't quite reach her cold, calculating eyes. Dressed in a sleek black wrap dress, she adjusted her posture as the heavy wooden doors of the foyer suddenly burst open with a violent crash. Leo, his hair disheveled and his dark charcoal suit crumpled from his frantic journey, rushed into the room, gasping for breath. "Dad! Dad!" he cried out, his voice cracking with pure, unadulterated agony.

Leo collapsed onto the heavy wooden lid of the casket, his shoulders shaking with violent, racking sobs. "When did all this happen, Maria? I want to see my father one last time," he begged, looking up at his young stepmother with tear-stained eyes, pleading for comfort. But Maria’s reaction was instant and fierce. She gripped his arms, her fingers digging deep into his suit jacket as she whispered frantically, "No, you can't! It can't be opened. Your father had a disease. A very contagious disease."

Beneath the heavy wood, in the suffocating pitch-blackness of the casket, Arthur was fighting for his very breath. He was not dead. Thick, silver duct tape was bound tightly over his mouth, and his hands were secured behind his back with plastic zip ties. Hearing his son’s voice just inches away, Arthur’s eyes widened with sheer terror. He thrashed desperately against his silk-lined prison, but the heavy lid wouldn't budge. He was buried alive in his own home, forced to listen to the woman he once trusted spin a deadly web of lies to his only son.
