His Father’s Casket Was Nailed Shut, But the Terrifying Truth Lay Trapped Inside
Previously: Leo rushed home to mourn his father's sudden death, but his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. He had no idea his father was still breathing inside.
The Sound in the Dark
Leo stared at Maria, his immense grief momentarily suspended by a sudden wave of confusion and suspicion.
"A contagious disease? Maria, the hospital would have quarantined him. Why is he here, in our living room, if he was infectious?"his voice rose, demanding clear answers. Maria’s eyes dinned nervously toward the door, her hands trembling. "It was his final wish, Leo. He wanted to be home. The private doctors allowed it, but only under strict conditions. We have to seal him immediately," she lied, her voice trembling slightly as she tried to pull him away from the casket.
But Leo wasn't listening. A cold dread was beginning to settle in his stomach. He placed his palms flat against the polished mahogany, weeping silently as he tried to connect with his father's spirit. As he closed his eyes, he felt something strange. A faint, rhythmic vibration pulsed against his fingertips. He froze, holding his breath in the quiet room. From inside the heavy wooden box came a distinct, muffled thud, followed by the frantic scratching of fingernails against fabric.
"Did you hear that?"Leo gasped, his heart hammering against his ribs. Maria’s face turned pale as a sheet. "It’s just... post-mortem gases, Leo! It’s natural. Please, we need to leave the room," she pleaded, grabbing his arm with desperate strength. But the scratching grew louder, accompanied by a desperate, choked groan that echoed from the wood. Leo looked from the casket to Maria’s terrified expression, and the horrific realization began to dawn on him. This was no contagious disease. Something was terribly wrong inside that casket, and Maria was hiding it.
