The Sealed Casket

The living room of the grand Sterling estate, usually filled with light and warmth, had been transformed into a cold, somber parlor. Heavy velvet drapes shut out the afternoon sun, leaving only the flickering glow of candles to illuminate the closed mahogany casket resting in the center of the room. Beside it stood Maria, dressed in an elegant black lace dress, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, severe ponytail. Her face was a mask of grief, but her hands gripped the edge of the casket with white-knuckled intensity.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors burst open. Leo, his navy suit rumpled and his face pale with shock, rushed into the room.

"Dad! Dad, no!"

he cried, his voice cracking with raw agony. He collapsed onto the heavy wooden lid of the casket, his tears spilling onto the polished wood.

"When did all this happen, Maria? Why didn't you call me sooner? I want to see my father one last time."

Before Leo could reach for the brass latches, Maria lunged forward, grabbing his shoulders with frantic strength.

"No, Leo, you can't! It can't be opened,"

she whispered, her voice trembling but fierce.

"Your father had a disease. A very contagious, aggressive disease. The medical examiner ordered it sealed immediately for safety."

Leo stared at her, confused and heartbroken. But beneath the thick wood of the casket, in the pitch-black silence, Arthur Sterling was wide awake. His hands were bound, and thick duct tape was sealed tightly over his mouth. Hearing his son's muffled voice, Arthur's heart hammered against his ribs. Tears of absolute terror rolled down his temples into his hair. He tried to scream, but only a faint, pathetic hum escaped his throat. He was being buried alive, and his own wife was standing guard to make sure he never got out.
