Her Husband Was Declared Dead, But His Son Heard a Sound Inside the Casket
Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. But a faint, desperate tapping from inside revealed a horrifying truth.
The Suspicious Lie
Leo stepped back, wiping his eyes. Maria's explanation felt wrong. His father, Arthur, had been in perfect health just two days ago when they spoke on the phone. How could a contagious disease kill him so suddenly and require an immediate, sealed home wake without an autopsy report in sight?
"A contagious disease?"Leo questioned, his grief temporarily eclipsed by a growing sense of suspicion.
"Why wasn't he taken to a hospital? Why is he here?"
Maria smoothed down her black lace dress, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway.
"It all happened so fast, Leo. The doctor said it was best to keep him here until the private burial tomorrow morning. Please, go rest. I will handle the arrangements."Her dismissive tone only heightened Leo's alarm. He pretended to capitulate, nodding slowly.
"I need a moment to wash my face,"he mumbled, walking out of the parlor.
But Leo didn't leave. He waited in the shadowed hallway, watching as Maria hurried toward the study, speaking in a frantic whisper on her phone. Seizing the opportunity, Leo slipped back into the silent parlor. He approached the casket, his heart beating wildly. He pressed his ear against the cold mahogany lid. For a long, agonizing second, there was only silence. Then, he heard itβa rhythmic, desperate scraping sound from inside, followed by a muffled, rhythmic thumping.
Someone was alive inside the casket.
Leo didn't hesitate. Ignoring the lock, he used a heavy brass candleholder from the nearby mantelpiece to pry open the latches. With a heavy groan, the wooden lid swung upward. Leo gasped, nearly dropping the brass holder. Lying inside, bound and gagged with his eyes wide with terror, was his father.
