The afternoon sun streamed through the high windows of the suburban kitchen, reflecting off the polished granite breakfast bar. To anyone passing by, it looked like the picture-perfect American home. But inside, a cold war was being waged. Seven-year-old Leo, wearing his favorite navy blue polo shirt, stood clutching his stomach. His blonde hair was slightly messy, and his blue eyes were filled with a quiet, pleading hope as he looked up at his stepmother, Lorna.

"Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?" Leo asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Lorna, a striking red-haired woman wearing a beige kitchen apron, was busy arranging a platter of freshly baked chicken and roasted vegetables. She didn't even look at him at first. When she finally turned, her face was twisted into a cold, sharp scowl. She slammed a serving spoon onto the counter, the loud clang making the young boy flinch.

"Don't call me just to ask for food," Lorna snapped, her voice dripping with venom. "I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."

Leo’s lip trembled. He took a step back, looking utterly defeated and hurt. He had spent months trying to earn the approval of his new stepmother, but to her, he was nothing more than an unwelcome ghost in his own house. Lorna turned back to the stove, completely indifferent to the child's pain.

She didn't hear the heavy footsteps approaching from the hallway. Mark, her husband, stood in the doorway. He was a tall, imposing man with a thick brown beard, still dressed in his dark grey business suit. His face was pale, his eyes burning with a mixture of intense sorrow and cold rage. He had heard every single word.

"Then your children shouldn't be eating either," Mark said, his voice deadly calm as he stepped into the kitchen, "cause I just found out that none of them are mine."

The serving spoon slipped from Lorna’s hand, clattering onto the floor. She spun around, her eyes widening in absolute shock, the color instantly draining from her face.
