The Shadow in the Next Car

The rattling of the New York subway train was a deafening, rhythmic roar that usually offered a strange kind of comfort, but tonight, it felt like a countdown. Sarah sat quietly against the scratched metallic wall of the L-train, her hands buried deep inside her coat pockets. The car was dimly lit, the fluorescent tubes overhead flickering sporadically, casting long, eerie shadows across the empty molded bench seats. From the speaker of his phone, a tinny, muffled voice crackled back, instantly recognizable as Julian's cold, commanding tone.

"She thinks she's safe out of town."

Mark narrowed his eyes, a grim smirk touching his lips as he replied into the receiver.

"She has nowhere left to run."

Through the metallic rattle of the train, his lips moved in a slow, menacing whisper."I know you're hiding."From the speaker of his phone…
