She Refused to Feed Her Hungry Stepson, Unaware Her Husband Knew Her Darkest Secret
The morning light filtered softly into the pristine kitchen, casting a warm glow over the white tiled backsplash. It was a picture-perfect setting, but the atmosphere inside the house was anything but warm. Seven-year-old Leo stood near the kitchen island, his small fingers nervously tugging at the hem of his blue plaid shirt. His stomach rumbled, a quiet but persistent reminder of his hunger.
He looked up at Lorna, his stepmother, who was busy arranging fresh fruit and packing elaborate lunches for her own two children. Lorna, wearing her signature beige apron, didn't even glance in his direction.
"Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?" Leo asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Lorna stopped what she was doing. She slowly turned around, her face twisting into a cold, irritated scowl. She wiped her hands on her apron and stepped closer, looming over the young boy.
"Don't call me just to ask for food," she snapped, her voice sharp and devoid of any warmth. "I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."
Leo's eyes welled with tears as he took a step back, looking down at his worn sneakers. He felt completely invisible, an unwanted guest in his father’s house. Lorna turned back to the counter, dismissing him entirely.
Suddenly, the heavy click of the front door echoed through the hallway. Heavy, purposeful footsteps approached the kitchen. Robert, Leo’s father, walked in. Still dressed in his sharp, dark grey suit from an early morning business meeting, his face was pale, his jaw clenched tightly.
Lorna forced a sweet smile, adjusting her apron. "Oh, Robert, you're home early. I was just making lunch for—"
Robert didn't let her finish. He looked at the plates of food on the counter, then down at his tearful son, and finally at his wife.
"Then your children shouldn't be eating either," Robert said, his voice dangerously calm. "'Cause I just found out that none of them are mine."
Lorna’s smile froze. Her eyes went wide with sheer shock, the color instantly draining from her face as the silence in the kitchen became deafening.
