She Refused To Feed Her Stepson, Unaware Her Husband Found Out Her Secret
A Cold Kitchen and a Bitter Truth
The afternoon sun filtered through the window of the traditional kitchen, casting a warm glow over the polished oak cabinets. But inside, the atmosphere was freezing. Eight-year-old Leo stood near the counter, his fingers nervously tugging at the hem of his green striped tee. He stared at the steaming plates of food that Lorna, his stepmother, was arranging on the table. The delicious aroma of roasted chicken made his stomach rumble painfully.
"Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?" Leo asked, his voice barely above a whisper. He had learned to be careful around her, but hunger had finally overridden his fear.
Lorna, wearing her favorite red kitchen apron, didn't even turn around at first. When she did, her face was twisted in irritation. She snapped,
"Don't call me just to ask for food. I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."
Leo looked downcast, his eyes welling with tears. He took a step back, wishing he could disappear into the floorboards. Lorna turned back to the stove, completely indifferent to the young boy's pain. She had always treated him like an outsider, a chore she was forced to tolerate only when her husband, Arthur, was watching.
But Arthur was watching now. Unbeknownst to Lorna, the front door had opened minutes ago. Standing in the kitchen doorway was Arthur, a tall man with a thick mustache, dressed in his sharp grey wool suit. He had heard every single word. His face was a mask of cold fury as he stepped into the light.
"Then your children shouldn't be eating either,"Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet,
"'cause I just found out that none of them are mine."
Lorna froze. She turned slowly, her face instantly losing all its color. Her eyes went wide with shock as she stared at her husband, the spatula slipping from her hand and clattering onto the counter.
