The Firing Line

The desert heat radiated off the dusty ground, creating a shimmering haze over the targets hundreds of yards away. Under the rustic wooden roof of the private shooting range, the air smelled heavily of dry earth and burnt gunpowder. Jessica stood quietly, her strawberry blonde hair tied back, wearing a simple navy fleece jacket. She looked out of place among the hardened tactical shooters gathered around, but her calm demeanor never wavered.

Standing beside her was Ryan, a renowned tactical instructor clad in black gear, a cap, and dark sunglasses. He looked at Jessica with open skepticism. To him, she was just another amateur trying to prove something she couldn't handle. He gestured coldly toward the long wooden table where her rifle case rested.

"Seven shots. Show us you belong on this firing line," Ryan said, his voice flat and demanding.

Jessica didn't reply. She unlatched her case and lifted the heavy bolt-action rifle. It was a serious weapon, built for extreme precision. Ryan watched her grip, his arms crossed over his chest.

"Careful," Ryan warned. "That rifle kicks harder than it looks. Right in the center, if you can find it."

A few spectators chuckled, expecting the heavy recoil to throw her off balance. Jessica ignored the noise. She raised the rifle to her shoulder, aligning her cheek with the stock. She exhaled slowly, letting the world fade away until there was only the crosshair and the spinning metal target downrange.

She squeezed the trigger. Boom. The rifle roared, but Jessica’s shoulder absorbed the recoil perfectly. Downrange, a sharp metallic clang echoed instantly. The target spun violently.

Ryan froze. He raised his binoculars, his jaw tightening. "Did she hit both?" he muttered to himself, unable to believe his eyes. Jessica didn't give him time to process. She calmly cycled the bolt, the spent cartridge clinking onto the wooden table.

"You gave me seven shots," Jessica said softly.

Before Ryan could respond, she fired again. And again. Seven shots, seven deafening roars, and seven perfect clangs. When she finished, the entire range was dead silent. Every single bullet had passed through the exact same microscopic hole in the bullseye.
