The Cruel Line in the Kitchen

The afternoon sun poured through the large bay windows of the suburban kitchen, casting a warm glow over the polished oak cabinets. On the counter sat a freshly baked chicken, its savory aroma filling the entire house. Eight-year-old Leo, dressed in a neat blue polo shirt, stood at the edge of the kitchen island. His stomach rumbled audibly. He looked up at his stepmother, Lorna, who was busy arranging plates for her own three children.

"Mrs. Lorna, is there food for me too?"
Leo asked, his voice barely above a whisper, his blue eyes filled with hope.

Lorna, wearing her favorite floral apron, stopped what she was doing. She slowly turned around, her face hardening into a cold, resentful glare. She didn't see a sweet child; she only saw an inconvenient reminder of her husband's past. She snapped instantly, her voice dripping with venom.

"Don't call me just to ask for food,"
Lorna hissed, leaning over the counter.
"I cook for my children, not for strangers. If you're hungry, wait until your father gets home. You are not my responsibility."

Leo flinched, his shoulders slumping as tears welled in his eyes. He took a step back, utterly humiliated and heartbroken. But before Lorna could turn back to her cooking, the heavy front door clicked open. Mark, a tall man with a thick mustache and wearing a sharp grey blazer, stepped into the kitchen. He had heard every single word.

His face was a mask of cold, unyielding anger. He clutched a thick manila envelope tightly in his right hand. He walked right past his weeping son, placing a protective hand on Leo's shoulder before locking eyes with his wife.

"Then your children shouldn't be eating either,"
Mark said, his voice dangerously calm,
"'cause I just found out that none of them are mine."

The color drained instantly from Lorna's face. The plate she was holding slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the granite countertop. Her eyes grew wide with absolute shock.
