Previously: When Lorna cruelly denied her stepson Leo a simple plate of food, she never expected her husband to walk in with a folder that would destroy her comfortable life forever.

The Truth in the Envelope

For several agonizing seconds, the kitchen was dead silent. The only sound was the hum of the refrigerator and Leo’s soft, sniffling breaths. Lorna stood frozen, her hands trembling as she stared at the manila envelope in Mark's hand. She tried to force a laugh, a dry, nervous sound that died quickly in her throat.

"Mark, what on earth are you talking about?"
Lorna stammered, her voice shaking.
"That’s not funny. You're letting your temper get the best of you just because of a silly misunderstanding with Leo. I was only joking with him!"

"Do I look like I am joking, Lorna?"
Mark replied, stepping forward and tossing the heavy envelope onto the kitchen island. It slid across the smooth surface, landing right next to the roasted chicken.

With trembling fingers, Lorna opened the envelope. Inside were three separate documents from a certified genetic testing laboratory. Each page bore the names of her three children—the ten-year-old twins and their six-year-old daughter—alongside Mark's name. Below, in bold, undeniable letters, was the probability of paternity: zero percent.

Mark explained how he had uncovered the devastating truth. A week prior, their youngest daughter had undergone a routine blood test before a minor tonsillectomy. The doctor had casually mentioned a rare blood type compatibility issue that made it biologically impossible for Mark to be her father. Consumed by sudden, agonizing doubt, Mark had quietly ordered DNA tests for all three children.

"I worked eighty hours a week, missing my own son's milestones, just to provide a lavish life for you and your kids,"
Mark said, his voice cracking with a mixture of betrayal and grief.
"And all the while, you treated Leo like a stray dog, denying him a simple plate of food in a house that my hard work paid for."

Lorna fell to her knees, sobbing hysterically. She reached out to grab Mark's trousers, begging for mercy, but he stepped back, disgust written all over his face.
