An Interrupted Farewell

The sky over the historic churchyard was a bruised, weeping gray. Heavy rain fell on the black umbrellas of the mourners gathered around the small, pristine white casket of seven-year-old Lily. Arthur stood at the head of the grave, his dark trench coat soaked, his thick brown beard glistening with water. His heart was hollow, shattered by the sudden, unexplained passing of his beloved daughter. Beside him, his wife Evelyn wept silently into a lace handkerchief, her pale face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed black hat.

Just as the priest raised his hands to offer the final blessing, the solemn silence was shattered. Muddy footsteps splashed violently through the puddles. Out of the mist ran Leo, an eleven-year-old neighbor boy, his clothes stained with clay and his brown hair plastered to his forehead. He bypassed the security guards and rushed straight toward Arthur.

"Sir, don't bury your daughter! She's not dead, she's in a coma!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking with desperation.

Arthur turned, his face twisting with a mixture of grief and fury. He grabbed the boy by his wet shoulders.

"What nonsense are you talking about, boy? Get out of here!" Arthur barked, his voice echoing off the ancient stone monuments.

But Leo didn't back down, even as two guards grabbed his arms to drag him away. He pointed a trembling, muddy finger directly at Evelyn.

"Your wife gave her a sleeping serum! I saw her do it through the window!" Leo yelled.

Arthur froze. He looked at Evelyn. His wife, usually so poised and elegant in her dark velvet dress, had gone completely white. Her hand flew to her throat, clutching her pearls in absolute terror. Her eyes darted wildly, refusing to meet Arthur's gaze.

"My wife would never hurt her," Arthur yelled, though a sickening seed of doubt had just been planted in his chest.
"Sir, look me in the eyes!" Leo screamed, struggling against the guards. "The little girl is alive!"

Arthur looked into the boy's terrified, honest eyes, then at his trembling wife. He turned to the pallbearers.

"Stop everything. Open the coffin," Arthur commanded.

Open the coffin," Arthur commanded.
