Previously: At his daughter's rainy funeral, Arthur is stopped by an eleven-year-old boy claiming the girl is only sleeping—and that Arthur's own wife is behind the horrific crime.

The Breath of Life

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd as the heavy wooden lid of the white casket was lifted. Evelyn shrieked, covering her face and dropping to her knees on the muddy grass, screaming that they were desecrating her stepdaughter's memory. But Arthur ignored her cries. He knelt by the coffin and gently touched Lily's pale cheek. It was cold, but not with the absolute, icy stillness of death. Looking closer, he noticed a faint, almost invisible condensation forming on the satin lining near her nose.

"She's breathing!" Arthur gasped, his hands trembling. "Someone call an ambulance! Now!"

Dr. Henderson, a family friend attending the service, rushed forward. He pushed past the stunned mourners and pressed his fingers against Lily's neck. For several agonizing seconds, there was absolute silence, save for the patter of the rain. Then, the doctor's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Her pulse is extremely weak and slow, but it's there," Dr. Henderson whispered. "She is alive. She's in a deep chemical stupor."

Arthur turned slowly to look at his wife. Evelyn was backing away, her heels sinking into the wet mud, her eyes wide with panic. She began to stammer, claiming she knew nothing, that it was a miracle, but Leo stepped forward again, flanked by the guards who had finally let him go.

"She's lying!" Leo said, his voice steady now. "Two nights ago, I went to Lily's window to return her flashlight. I saw Mrs. Evelyn pouring a blue liquid from a small vial into Lily's warm milk. Lily fell asleep instantly, and the next morning, you found her cold. I searched the internet and realized it was a rare anesthetic serum!"

Evelyn turned to run toward the cemetery gates, but two police officers, who had been stationed nearby for traffic control, intercepted her. Arthur stared at the woman he had loved, realizing he had been sleeping next to a monster.
