The rain fell in relentless sheets, washing over the cold, grey concrete of the city's forgotten district. Amelia stood on the slick pavement, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. She wore a sharp navy blazer, her honey-blonde hair damp with mist, but her eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses to conceal the tears she could no longer hold back. Below her, sitting on the cold curbstone, was a man who looked like a ghost.

His name was Marcus. Once, he had been a man of elegance and brilliant mind, but now he was grimy, his dark-brown hair wild and unkempt, his face marked with faint, mysterious scars. Behind them, a silent line of men in black suits stood like vultures, watching every movement.

Amelia knelt directly into the wet puddle, ignoring the ruin of her clothes. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a dark grey velvet box. Opening it, she revealed a glowing diamond ring that caught the dim streetlights.

"Marry me," Amelia pleaded, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

Marcus stared at the glittering jewel, his bewildered eyes darting from the ring to the elegant woman kneeling before him. He flinched, pulling his tattered jacket tighter around his shoulders.

"Why me?" he rasped, his voice rough and dry. "I am nothing. A nobody."

Amelia felt a single tear roll past her sunglasses, tracing a path down her pale cheek.

"Please," she whispered. "Only you can help me."

A black town car splashed violently through a nearby puddle, its tires screeching to a halt. As Marcus’s dirty fingers tentatively reached out to touch the cold platinum of the ring, a sharp, authoritative voice cut through the storm.

"Amelia, stop!"

Marcus’s eyes widened in sudden, shocking recognition as he touched the metal.

"This name..." he muttered.

The voice from the car roared in panic.

"Don't let him remember!"

With a sudden scream of pure terror, Marcus leapt to his feet, clutching the velvet box tightly to his chest.
