The Touch of a Stranger

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the cobblestone courtyard of the grand estate. Marian sat in her custom mahogany wheelchair, her fingers gently stroking the soft fur of her loyal Labrador, Barnaby. Dressed in a rich burgundy silk gown that contrasted sharply with her lifeless legs, she stared out into the gardens, lost in a melancholy that had consumed her for a decade. Ten years had passed since the tragic accident that had robbed her of her mobility and her memories of the years before it.

Suddenly, the peaceful silence was shattered. A young man, his clothes tattered and his face smeared with soot, stumbled into the courtyard. He wore a simple, dusty grey tunic, looking entirely out of place in the opulent surroundings. Before Marian could call for security, the stranger collapsed to his knees right in front of her. He reached out with trembling, dirt-caked hands, aiming straight for her feet.

"Don't touch me!"

Marian gasped, pulling her skirts back in sudden panic. Within seconds, her maid Hazel rushed forward in her neat grey uniform, her face pale with alarm. She grabbed the young man by his shoulders, trying to drag him away from her mistress. "Get back! How dare you trespass here!" Hazel cried out.

But as Marian looked down at the intruder, something stopped her. His eyes—deep, familiar, and filled with an unspeakable sorrow—locked onto hers. A strange warmth stirred in her chest.

"Leave him alone," Marian commanded softly, raising a hand. "Let's see what he wants."

Hazel hesitated but stepped back. The young man, whom we would learn was named Eli, knelt reverently. Slowly, he placed his calloused palms onto the cold metal of the wheelchair's footrest. What happened next defied all laws of nature. A brilliant, warm golden light began to emanate from his hands, wrapping around Marian's legs. Hazel watched in stunned, open-mouthed disbelief as the light seeped into Marian's skin.

For the first time in ten years, Marian felt a tingling warmth. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked down, then back up at the stranger.

"How?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Eli looked deeply into her eyes, a faint, bittersweet smile on his face.

"Soon you will remember me," he said softly.
