A Dirty Stranger Healed My Paralyzed Legs—And Unlocked A Dark Family Secret
Previously: When a tattered stranger heals Marian's paralyzed legs with a mysterious golden light, she thinks it's a miracle. But his parting words unlock a dark family secret she was forced to forget.
Echoes of the Past
Before Marian could ask another question, the golden glow faded, and Eli collapsed onto the cobblestones, gasping for air as if the miracle had drained his very life force. Marian, acting on pure instinct, did the impossible. She pushed herself forward, planted her feet firmly on the ground, and stood up. Hazel let out a sharp shriek of pure terror and joy, covering her mouth with both hands.
Marian took one tentative step, then another. The legs that had been useless weights for a decade now carried her flawlessly. She wept openly, the physical miracle overwhelming her senses. But the physical healing was only the beginning. As her feet touched the earth, a dam broke inside her mind. Fragmented images flashed behind her eyes: a hidden garden, a wooden swing, and a young boy with the same piercing green eyes as the exhausted man lying before her.
"Eli..." she whispered, the name slipping from her lips like a long-forgotten prayer. She knelt beside him, ignoring the dirt ruining her burgundy silk dress. "Hazel, help me get him inside. Now!"
They brought Eli into the grand parlor, placing him on a velvet sofa. As Hazel rushed to fetch water, Marian studied Eli's face. Underneath the grime and the scars of time, she recognized him. He was the boy from her youth, her childhood sweetheart whom her aristocratic family had forbidden her from seeing. But why had she forgotten him? And how did he possess such power?
When Eli finally opened his eyes, he looked at her with a mixture of awe and relief. "You spoke my name," he croaked, his voice dry. "The magic... it didn't just heal your body. It broke the curse."
Marian frowned, her heart racing. "What curse, Eli? What happened to us ten years ago? My uncle told me you died in the carriage accident that paralyzed me!"
Eli shook his head, a tear cutting a clean path through the dirt on his cheek. "There was no carriage accident, Marian. Your uncle poisoned your mind and your body to steal your inheritance. And he made sure you would never remember the only person who would fight for you."
