A Shocking Discovery in the Kitchen

The bustling, metallic clatter of the industrial kitchen at the estate usually brought Matteo a sense of order. But tonight, a strange intuition guided him away from the grand ballroom and down into the humid, sterile depths of the prep area. He was searching for his fiancée, Victoria, who had slipped away from their engagement party. Instead, he found a scene that shattered his reality. Standing by the deep industrial sink, her shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs, was Elena. She wore a stained, charcoal apron, her blonde hair tied back in a messy knot, and her face—the face he had dreamed of for five agonizing years—was bruised.

Matteo froze, his heart slamming against his ribs. "Elena, what's going on?" he demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of disbelief and sudden, overwhelming rage.

Elena gasped, spinning around, her eyes wide with terror as she tried to shield her face.

"Matteo, what are you doing here? You shouldn't be down here!"
she wept, her voice trembling. Before Matteo could step closer, a shadow detached itself from the corner. Victoria stepped forward, her sleeveless emerald green evening gown looking ridiculously out of place in the greasy kitchen. She waved her hand dismissively, a cold, mocking smile on her lips.

"Come on, overreacting,"
Victoria sneered, adjusting her diamond bracelet.
"She's just trying to help. She's a clumsy girl, Matteo. She fell."

Matteo ignored his fiancée, stepping directly into Elena's space. He reached out, his hands trembling as he gently cupped her bruised cheek, forcing her to look into his eyes. "Look at me," he whispered, tears stinging his own eyes. "Do you really want to stay down here?"

Elena broke down completely, the tears washing over the dark bruise on her cheek.

"No,"
she sobbed, casting a terrified glance at Victoria.
"She said I belong in this kitchen because I'm the mother of your daughter."
