The Web of Deceit Unravels

The words hung in the humid air of the kitchen like a death sentence. Matteo’s hand dropped from Elena’s face as his gaze slowly turned toward Victoria. The glamorous brunette’s smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by a pale mask of panic. For five years, Matteo had been led to believe that Elena had abandoned him and their newborn daughter, Lily, fleeing the country with a wealthy lover. He had grieved, closed his heart, and eventually allowed his family to push him into an engagement with Victoria, a woman of their own social standing.

"What is she talking about, Victoria?"
Matteo asked, his voice dangerously quiet, vibrating with absolute fury.

"She's lying, Matteo! She's mentally unstable!"
Victoria hissed, taking a step back, her heels clicking sharply against the wet tile floor.
"She abandoned you! I found her working as a vagrant and gave her a job out of the charity of my heart. She’s trying to ruin our wedding!"

But Elena had reached her breaking point. The years of fear, isolation, and physical abuse melted away under the warmth of Matteo's protective presence.

"She threatened my family, Matteo,"
Elena cried out, her voice echoing off the stainless steel walls.
"Five years ago, she intercepted my medical records. She told me that if I didn't disappear, she would use your family's immense wealth and legal power to declare me unfit, take Lily away, and ruin my parents. She forced me to sign over custody rights and made me work here under a fake name, keeping me under her thumb so she could watch me suffer."

Elena touched her bruised cheek, her voice dropping to a whisper.

"Tonight, I tried to leave because I heard Lily was sick. Victoria found me here... and she struck me."
