My Husband Ruined Our Marriage for His Mother, So I Froze His Fortune
The Breaking Point in the Foyer
The marble foyer of the Sterling mansion was cold, but nothing compared to the ice in Ryan’s eyes. Mariana stood trembling in her emerald green velvet gown, her heart pounding against her ribs. Just moments ago, she had finally confronted Eleanor, her mother-in-law, about the thousands of dollars systematically drained from the family trust. But Eleanor, a master of victimhood, had instantly dissolved into crocodile tears, clinging to her son’s arm.
"Never talk to my mother like that!" Ryan roared.
With a sudden, violent motion, Ryan shoved Mariana back. She stumbled, her heel catching on the edge of the Persian rug, and fell against the gilded console table. Eleanor watched from the shadows of the grand staircase, a smug, triumphant smile playing on her lips. She had finally succeeded in turning her son completely against his wife.
Mariana lay on the cold marble for a second, the sting of betrayal burning hotter than physical pain. She slowly picked up her black leather clutch, her fingers trembling but her resolve hardening. As she stood, she caught her reflection in the gilded mirror. A sharp, red scratch marred her pale cheek, courtesy of Ryan's heavy signet ring during the struggle.
She turned to face her husband of three years. Ryan looked momentarily startled by his own violence, but his pride kept him rooted to the spot, his chest heaving. Mariana stepped close, ignoring the smug matriarch behind him, and looked directly into his eyes.
"Remember every word you just said," she whispered, her voice deadly calm.
Without waiting for a response, she turned and walked through the heavy double doors into the pouring rain. A luxury black sedan was already waiting for her. As the door closed behind her, shutting out the storm, Mariana pulled out her phone. She dialed her family’s private attorney. When the lawyer answered, his voice was grave: "Ms. Mariana, the lawyers have activated all the clauses." Mariana looked out into the dark night, her eyes turning to stone. "Freeze everything," she commanded.
”"Freeze everything," she commanded.
