My Mother Fired the Maid, But Her Silver Watch Exposed a Heartbreaking Lie
The morning sun filtered through the grand stained-glass windows of the luxury foyer, casting long, cold shadows across the polished marble floor. Arthur stood near the base of the wooden winding staircase, his heart pounding against his ribs. In his arms, his four-year-old son Noah sobbed softly, burying his small face into Arthur's shoulder. Arthur's grip was tight, protective, and desperate. Standing just a few feet away was Sarah, their quiet, hardworking maid, her black uniform wrinkled, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
A Cold Dismissal
Arthur looked up the stairs, where his mother, Eleanor, stood like an icy statue. Dressed in a flawless black silk blouse, her posture was rigid, her expression devoid of any maternal warmth.
"Why did you fire her?"
Arthur demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and anger. He had trusted Sarah completely; she was the only one who truly knew how to comfort Noah.
Eleanor did not flinch. She gripped the wooden banister, looking down at them with utter disdain.
"Because she lied from the day she entered this house,"
Eleanor replied coldly, her tone sharp enough to cut glass.
Sarah let out a ragged sob, her hands shaking violently. She reached into her apron pocket and pulled out an engraved silver pocket watch, clutching it to her chest as if it were a lifeline. Arthur gasped slightly; he recognized that watch.
"Celeste was my sister,"
Sarah tearfully revealed, her voice cracking under the weight of the confession.
Arthur felt the air leave his lungs. Celeste, his late wife who had supposedly abandoned him and Noah shortly after childbirth, had never been spoken of in this house. Eleanor had made sure of that.
"Tell me the truth,"
Arthur whispered, stepping closer to Sarah, his eyes pleading.
Sarah looked at the crying toddler, then back to Arthur.
"Your mother kept Noah's..."
she began, her voice trembling, before Eleanor's sharp voice cut her off.
