The Shocking Discovery in the Vestibule

The heavy mahogany doors of the luxury mansion swung open, letting in the cool autumn breeze. Richard, a successful fifty-year-old businessman, stepped into the grand vestibule. He loosened his silk tie, exhausted from a grueling week of corporate travel. He expected the quiet, sterile comfort of his estate. Instead, the faint sound of muffled sobbing echoed off the polished granite floors and the sweeping marble staircase. Richard frowned, walking deeper into the entryway. What he saw made him freeze in absolute disbelief.

Kneeling on the cold granite was a young woman in a faded blue domestic service uniform. Her light-brown hair was pulled back haphazardly, and she was desperately scrubbing soapy water off the floor. As she wiped her face with a trembling hand, she looked up. Richard felt his heart stop. It was Sarah, his twenty-three-year-old daughter who had vanished three years ago. Her eyes widened in terror and hope.

"Dad?"
she whispered, her voice cracking with raw emotion.

Before Richard could even find his voice to speak, Sarah quickly lowered her head, sobbing quietly as she resumed scrubbing the floor as if terrified of being punished. Richard stood paralyzed, his mind racing. How could his daughter, whom he had searched for desperately, be working as a maid in his own home?

Suddenly, the soft click of heels broke the silence. Catherine, Richard’s elegant forty-six-year-old wife, stepped out from the living room. She held a half-empty glass of white wine, her expression perfectly composed.

"You're home so early, darling,"
she said smoothly, walking past the weeping girl without a single glance. The atmosphere in the grand hall instantly turned ice-cold, thick with unspoken secrets.
