Richard did not answer his wife. Instead, he dropped his leather briefcase to the floor and rushed to Sarah's side. Ignoring the soapy water that stained his expensive dark grey suit, he grabbed her trembling hands and pulled her up from the floor.

"Sarah, look at me,"

he pleaded, his voice shaking.

"What is the meaning of this? Why are you here? Why are you dressed like this?"

Sarah kept her eyes glued to the floor, her shoulders shaking with heavy sobs. Catherine stepped forward, taking a slow sip of her wine.

"Oh, don't make a scene, Richard,"

she sighed dismissively.

"She came begging for a job last week. I took pity on her and gave her a position. She is just a maid now."

The coldness in Catherine's voice sparked a sudden, fierce anger in Sarah. She looked up, her tear-streaked face flushed with rage.

"That is a lie!"

Sarah shouted, looking at her father.

"She didn't take pity on me! She found me at my lowest, Dad. When I left three years ago, it wasn't because I wanted to. Catherine told me that if I didn't leave, she would use your influence to ruin my college applications and cut off my grandmother's medical fund. She forced me out!"

Richard stared at his wife, his blood running cold. Catherine’s face hardened, her elegant mask slipping for a fraction of a second.

"She is lying to get your money, Richard,"

Catherine sneered.

"She is nothing but a failure."

But Sarah wasn't finished.

"When my grandmother passed away and I fell into debt, Catherine found me again,"

Sarah cried.

"She offered to pay my remaining debts only if I agreed to work here as a servant, to humiliate me and show me my place. She made me sign a contract!"
