An Unexpected Homecoming

The polished limestone floors of the Vance estate always gleamed, but today, they were slick with soapy water. Grace, twenty-five, knelt in the center of the grand reception hall, her hands trembling as she dragged a heavy sponge across the cold stone. Tears dripped from her nose, mixing with the suds. She wore a cheap, scratchy maid's uniform that felt like a mockery of the life she once knew. Every scrub was a painful reminder of how far she had fallen.

Suddenly, the heavy oak front door swung open. Charles Vance, fifty-one, stepped inside, his mind still lingering on the multi-million-dollar merger he had just closed. He was early. He expected silence, or perhaps a welcoming smile from his new wife, Evelyn. Instead, he froze. His briefcase slipped from his hand, clattering against the limestone.

Grace gasped, her head snapping up. Her red, swollen eyes locked onto his. Her breath hitched in her throat.

'Dad?' she whispered, the word escaping her lips before she could stop it.

Charles stared in total disbelief. The daughter he thought was studying abroad, the young woman he believed had cut ties with him over his quick remarriage, was kneeling at his feet like a servant. Before he could speak, Grace quickly lowered her head, sobbing quietly as she resumed scrubbing with frantic, desperate motions.

From the top of the sweeping staircase, a soft, mocking voice broke the tension.

'You're home so early, darling,' Evelyn said, swirling a glass of expensive red wine as she glided down the steps. She didn't look at Grace, treating her like an invisible fixture of the house.

Charles looked from his elegant new wife to his weeping daughter, his heart dropping into a cold abyss of confusion and rising fury.
