The autumn air was thick with a cold, clinging mist as Rachel hurried down the bustling city street. The neon signs of the downtown district blurred into smears of pink and blue against the wet asphalt. Clutching her collar against the damp chill, Rachel felt the familiar, sharp edges of the gold leaf pin fastened to her lapel. It was her most prized possession—a rare heirloom featuring a deep, ocean-blue sapphire, supposedly one of only two in existence.

Suddenly, a sharp tug on her leather jacket broke her stride. She spun around, her defensive instincts instantly kicking in.

"Hey, don't touch me!"

she snapped, pulling her arm back. Standing before her was a young boy, no older than nine, his face smudged with soot and tears. He wore a dirty blue denim jacket that was far too thin for the freezing night. He was trembling violently, but his grip on a small, glittering object in his hand was absolute.

"Excuse me, but you have the same pin,"

the boy whimpered, his voice cracking with desperation. Rachel froze, her annoyance instantly melting into confusion. She looked down at his outstretched, trembling hands. Resting in his dirty palm was a gold leaf pin, identical in every intricate detail to her own, its large blue gemstone catching the streetlights.

"What are you talking about?"

Rachel whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of passing traffic. Her heart began to hammer against her ribs.

"My mom has the same pin, here,"

Danny sobbed, holding the jewelry closer to her. Rachel stared at the twin heirloom. Ten years ago, her older sister Clara had vanished without a trace, taking the second pin with her. Rachel's breath caught in her throat as a single, hot tear welled in her eye, spilling down her cheek. The world around her seemed to go completely silent as she stared at the boy.
