A Boy Stopped Me on the Street Holding My Missing Sister's Heirloom
Previously: When a crying boy stopped Rachel on a misty street to show her a gold pin, she froze. It was the exact heirloom her sister took when she vanished ten years ago.
A Ghost from the Past
Rachel knelt on the wet pavement, ignoring the dirt staining her jeans as she grabbed the boy's trembling shoulders.
"What is your name?"
she asked, trying to keep her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.
"Danny,"
the boy sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve.
"My mom is really sick. She gave me this and told me to find a jeweler who would buy it. She said it was worth a lot, but I don't want to sell it. It's the only beautiful thing she owns."
Rachel's mind raced. The pin in Danny's hand was unmistakable. Their grandmother had commissioned only two of these pieces before she passed. Clara had worn hers every single day until the night she disappeared from their childhood home, leaving behind nothing but an empty bedroom and a shattered family.
"Danny, please,"
Rachel pleaded, her hand shaking as she pointed to the alleyway.
"Where is your mother? Take me to her. Right now."
Danny hesitated, looking at her with wide, fearful eyes, but the desperation in Rachel's face must have convinced him. He nodded slowly and turned, leading her away from the bright, crowded avenue and into the maze of dark, narrow side streets.
With every step, Rachel's heart beat faster. Was it possible? Could Clara really be alive, living in the shadows of the same city? For ten years, Rachel had searched, prayed, and eventually grieved, believing her sister was gone forever. Danny stopped in front of a crumbling tenement building at the edge of the industrial district. He pushed open a heavy, rusted door, leading Rachel down a dim, damp hallway that smelled of mildew and old rain. He stopped at a door at the very end of the hall, pushing it open to reveal a tiny, freezing room lit only by a single flickering bulb.
