The Interrupted Vows

The jasmine-scented air of the chapel felt suffocatingly sweet as I stood hand-in-hand with Thomas. We were seconds away from being pronounced husband and wife. But just as the minister cleared his throat, the heavy oak doors banged open. My nine-year-old sister, Lily, came sprinting down the aisle, her small hands clutching a vintage analog camera like a lifeline. Her face was pale, and tears pooled in her wide brown eyes.

Thomas instantly snapped. His handsome face twisted into a mask of pure fury as he glared at the child. "Get her out!" he screamed, his voice echoing off the stained-glass windows. "Where are the ushers? Get her out of here right now!"

I recoiled, shocked by the venom in his voice. This wasn't the gentle man I loved. Lily ignored him, ducking past our mother and throwing herself behind my flowy silk dress. She clung to the fabric, trembling violently. Thomas took a step toward her, his fists clenched. "So what? She's just looking for attention," he snarled, trying to sound dismissive, though his eyes darted nervously. "She's lying. Claire, don't listen to her."

Lily looked up at me, her voice small but piercingly clear.

"The camera heard you," she whispered, holding the heavy device up to me. "He said he used you. He said it to her."

My heart dropped. The chapel fell into a dead silence. I stared at the vintage camera, which Lily had modified with a small digital recording attachment she loved to play with. With trembling fingers, I pressed the play button. A crackling sound filled the room, followed by Thomas’s unmistakable voice. "After the wedding, I'll take her share of the estate. Then we can finally be together, babe. I'm just using her."

Thomas watched me in sheer panic, his face losing all color as the recording played.
