A Hero in Greasy Gloves

The diner was suffocatingly hot, filled with the clatter of cheap silverware and the heavy scent of frying grease. Seventeen-year-old Toby wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm, his hands encased in thick black kitchen gloves. He was just trying to survive his shift under the iron fist of his manager, Marcus. Marcus was a bald, bitter man who measured a person’s worth solely by how many orders of hash browns they could flip in an hour. But in an instant, the mundane noise of the diner was shattered by a mother’s desperate, high-pitched scream.

At a corner table, seven-year-old Leo was turning a terrifying shade of blue, his hands clawing at his throat. He was choking. Toby didn't think twice. Dropping his spatula, he bolted from the kitchen line, tearing past the swinging doors. Behind him, Marcus’s voice boomed over the din, raw and furious:

"Toby! Get back to work or you're finished!"

Toby ignored the threat. He reached the boy, dropped to his knees, and wrapped his arms around Leo's small frame. Using every ounce of strength, Toby performed the Heimlich maneuver. On the third thrust, a piece of hard candy dislodged and flew onto the linoleum floor. Leo gasped, drawing in a ragged, beautiful breath of air as his mother sobbed in relief.

Before Toby could even catch his breath, a heavy hand slammed onto his shoulder. It was Marcus, his face purple with rage.

"You left your station during the rush. You're fired. Pack your things and get out,"
Marcus sneered. But before Toby could process the devastating blow, the boy’s father, Arthur, stepped forward. Clad in a navy blue windbreaker, his eyes were burning with a mixture of awe and fury. He grabbed Toby’s arm gently but firmly.
"You saved my son,"
Arthur whispered. Then, he whipped out his phone, dialed a number, and spoke with absolute authority:
"This young man just saved a child's life. Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter. Send the board members to my location."

Send the board members to my location."
