Previously: When a heartless manager fires teenage kitchen worker Toby for saving a choking little boy, he has no idea that the boy's father is a powerful doctor ready to change Toby's life forever.

A Bright New Future

Marcus dropped his hands to his sides, his knees visibly shaking.

"Dr. Carter, please,"
he stammered, his voice losing all its previous venom.
"I was stressed. The lunch rush... I didn't mean it. Toby is a great kid. Toby, tell him! You're not fired. In fact, I'll give you a raise!"

Toby looked at the man who had demeaned and overworked him for months. For the first time, Toby realized he didn't have to be afraid of people like Marcus anymore. Dr. Carter smiled gently at Toby.

"You don't need his raise, Toby. How would you like to work somewhere that actually values your quick thinking and courage?"
the doctor asked.
"My hospital has an internship program for aspiring medical students. We cover tuition, housing, and provide a living stipend. I think you'd make an incredible paramedic, or perhaps even a doctor one day."

Tears welled in Toby’s eyes as he nodded eagerly.

"Yes, sir. More than anything,"
he managed to choke out. Dr. Carter turned back to Marcus, his expression turning to ice.
"As for you, Marcus, you have exactly thirty days to pack up this diner. Your lease will not be renewed. Perhaps you can use that time to learn some basic humanity."

A few weeks later, the diner stood empty, a stark reminder of how quickly greed and cruelty can lead to ruin. Meanwhile, Toby traded his greasy black gloves for a pristine white lab coat, stepping into a bright future he had earned through a single, selfless act of bravery. Sometimes, doing the right thing doesn't just save another person's life—it can completely rewrite your own.
