The Unwelcome Visitor

The morning sun streamed through the high, arched windows of the grand metropolitan bank, casting long, golden shadows across the polished white marble floor. Behind the pristine counter, thirty-two-year-old Arthur adjusted his charcoal-colored suit jacket. He was a man who prided himself on order and prestige, which was why the sight of a ten-year-old boy standing alone in the lobby instantly irritated him. The boy, Leo, wore a faded blue hoodie that looked two sizes too big, and his sneakers were scuffed. Standing right beside him was Officer Davis, a local policeman who had escorted the child inside after finding him wandering near the entrance.

Arthur leaned over the marble counter, his face hardening into a cold mask. "Leave. Now," he commanded, his voice dripping with condescension. He didn't want a stray kid ruining the atmosphere of his high-end branch.

But Leo didn't flinch. He looked up with wide, serious eyes and gripped a small object tightly in his hand.

"I want to check my account,"
the boy replied, his voice remarkably steady for his age.

Arthur scoffed, ready to call for security to assist Officer Davis in removing the child. However, before he could speak, Leo reached out and placed a heavy, metallic gold envelope onto the counter. Arthur's eyes narrowed. The envelope looked incredibly expensive, sealed with an intricate wax stamp that Arthur recognized instantly—it was the crest of the bank's most exclusive, private wealth division.

Arthur reached out and took the gold envelope, his fingers tracing the cold wax. "Where did you get this?" he demanded, his tone shifting from annoyance to suspicion.

"It is mine. My grandmother left it for me,"
Leo answered softly, his gaze never wavering.

Skeptical, Arthur began typing quickly on his computer keyboard to look up the account number printed on the back of the envelope. He expected the system to throw an error, or perhaps show a meager savings account. But as the computer processed the request, the screen suddenly flashed red, displaying a high-security clearance prompt. Arthur's intense expression froze as he entered his supervisor credentials, and the final screen loaded. Leo leaned forward, his voice a quiet whisper in the tense silence:

"What is my balance?"
