Previously: Bound to a wheelchair and controlled by her overbearing fiancé, Clara’s life changes forever when a mysterious, barefoot stranger crashes an opulent ballroom gala with a shocking promise.

The Poisoned Truth

Before Clara could reach for Leo’s hand, Arthur snapped out of his trance. He violently shoved Leo back and roared for the security guards. Three heavy-set men rushed forward, grabbing Leo by his arms. But as they began to drag him away, Leo didn't struggle against their grip; instead, he screamed over the commotion, his eyes locked onto Clara’s terrified face.

"Clara! Remember the clinic in Switzerland!" Leo shouted, his voice echoing off the high-vaulted ceiling. "The daily blue pills Arthur forces you to take are not medicine! He paid the doctors to keep you paralyzed! It is a neurotoxin to ensure you never walk, so he can keep control of your inheritance!"

A horrified murmur broke out among the high-society guests. Arthur’s face flushed a deep crimson, his eyes darting around the room in sheer panic.

"He is a lunatic! A trespasser! Get him out of here immediately!" Arthur yelled, his voice cracking with desperation.

The guards slammed the heavy oak doors behind Leo, but the damage was already done. The room was thick with tension. Arthur quickly knelt beside Clara, his hands trembling as he reached into her silk purse. He pulled out the familiar silver pillbox containing her evening medication. He pressed the blue capsule toward her lips, his breathing shallow.

"Don't listen to that madman, Clara," Arthur whispered, his voice pleading but laced with a dark intensity. "You need to take your medicine right now. It will calm your nerves. Come on, swallow it."

Clara looked at the small blue pill, then up at Arthur’s face. For the first time in three years, the fog in her mind cleared. She noticed the subtle, desperate panic in Arthur's eyes—not the worry of a loving fiancé, but the terror of a criminal about to be caught. With a sudden burst of defiance, Clara slapped Arthur’s hand away, sending the blue pill bouncing across the marble floor.
