Previously: When a young boy approached Vance begging him to buy a handmade wooden motorcycle, the rugged biker had no idea the child carried a secret that would connect back to his own tragic past.

The Shadow of the Past

The words hung in the damp air, heavy and impossible. Vance stared at the little boy, whose green eyes mirrored a gaze he had not seen in nearly a decade. The boy's name was Timmy. Holding the child's small hand, Vance led his fellow bikers toward the dilapidated trailer crouching at the edge of the woods. Every step felt like walking through deep mud, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had spent eight years nursing a bitter grudge, believing his younger brother, Thomas, had run off with the only woman he had ever loved, Clara.

He pushed open the creaking door of the trailer. Inside, the air was cold and smelled of medicine. In the center of the cramped living room sat a hospital bed. A frail, dangerously thin man lay beneath the blankets—Thomas. Sitting beside him, her face lined with grief and exhaustion, was Clara. When her eyes met Vance's, she gasped, dropping a stack of yellowed papers to the floor.

"Vance? You... you found him," she whispered, her voice trembling.

Vance's anger, kept hot for eight years, flared up, but the sight of his dying brother tempered it with sudden, confusing grief.

"Why did you do it, Thomas?" Vance demanded, stepping closer to the bed. "Why did you take her and disappear?"

Thomas slowly opened his eyes, a weak, sorrowful smile touching his lips.

"I didn't take her, brother," Thomas whispered, his voice barely a rasp. "I was hiding her. From our father."

Clara stepped forward, picking up the fallen papers. She handed them to Vance with shaking hands. They were bank statements, legal threats, and private investigator reports, all bearing the name of Vance's late, abusive father—a powerful man who had sworn to destroy Clara and any child she bore to Vance, whom he deemed an outcast.

"Your father threatened to kill us, Vance," Clara explained, tears spilling over. "Thomas found out. He staged my disappearance and hid me here to keep us safe. He sacrificed his own life to protect your son."
