Esteban drove like a madman to the city hospital, Lily buckled securely in the passenger seat. The warm, celebratory light of the wedding chapel was replaced by the harsh, sterile glow of the ICU. His heart pounded against his ribs as he followed Lily down the quiet, white corridors. When he pushed open the door to Room 402, his world shattered.
There, lying in a narrow hospital bed, was Sarah. She was terribly pale, her blonde hair spread across the pillow, hooked up to whispering monitors. She looked so fragile, a ghost of the vibrant woman he once knew. Hearing the door open, she weakly opened her eyes. When her gaze fell upon Esteban, a spark of recognition flared in her tired eyes.

Esteban rushed to her bedside, taking her cold hand in his.
"I'm here, Sarah. I'm right here,"he choked out, tears blurring his vision. But the tender moment was abruptly shattered when Vanessa, still clad in her expensive wedding gown, burst into the room. Her face was contorted with rage.
"How dare you humiliate me!"Vanessa shrieked, ignoring the sterile environment.
"You left me at the altar for this... this charity case? If you don't walk out of here right now, my father will ruin you, and your family will disown you!"
But Esteban barely heard her. His attention was grabbed by the attending physician who had slipped into the room. The doctor gently explained that Sarah was suffering from a rare, aggressive heart condition. A specialized, highly expensive surgery could save her, but without insurance or immediate funds, the hospital could only offer palliative care. Sarah was running out of time. As Esteban looked from the doctor to Lily, and then to Sarah, the truth finally hit him. Lily had his eyes, his mother's nose.
