Previously: When seventy-two-year-old Edward is approached by a desperate young boy claiming a baby can heal his legs, he laughs. But one tiny touch unlocks a long-buried family secret.

The Secret in the Blanket

The moment the baby's skin met his knee, a sudden, searing warmth surged through Edward's legs. It wasn't a magical instant cure, but a deep, vibrating tingleβ€”a sensation he hadn't felt in over a decade. Gasps escaped his lips as his toes twitched inside his leather shoes. His eyes widened in absolute shock, staring down at the innocent infant who had just sparked life into his dead nerves. But as he looked closer at the baby, his breath caught for an entirely different reason.

Pinned to the corner of the soft white blanket was a tarnished silver locket shaped like an oak leaf. Edward's hands began to shake violently. He reached out with trembling fingers, unpinning the locket and snapping it open. Inside was a faded photograph of a young woman with the exact same emerald-green eyes as the baby. It was Clara, his estranged daughter who had vanished eight years ago after a bitter argument.

"Where did you get this?"
Edward demanded, his voice cracking with a mixture of hope and terror. He gripped Leo's shoulder.
"Who does this baby belong to? Tell me the truth!"

Leo tearfully looked down.

"She's my baby sister, Lily,"
the boy sobbed.
"Our mom, Clara, is very sick. She's at the community shelter down the street. She told me to take Lily and find the man in the olive suit who sits outside this deli every Tuesday. She said you were a good man, even if she had been too proud to admit it."

Edward's heart shattered. His daughter had been living in poverty, blocks away, keeping watch on him from afar while battling a terrible illness. She had sent her children to him as a last resort, using the only heirloom she had left to guide them home.
