A Night of Scorn and a Glimmer of Hope

The city skyline shimmered through the rain-streaked glass of the rooftop restaurant, a breathtaking panorama of a thousand glittering lights. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and hushed conversations. Polished marble floors reflected the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, and white linen tablecloths were set with gleaming silver. It was a world away from Arthur’s life, a world of calloused hands and faded tweed.

Arthur, seventy-two, sat opposite Julian, a man half his age with eyes as sharp and cold as the diamonds on his pinky finger. Julian, a pawn broker known for his ruthless efficiency, exuded an aura of arrogant wealth in his tailored suit. Arthur, humble and weathered, clutched a velvet-wrapped object on the table, his gentle sorrow evident in his deep-set wrinkles.

Julian: "Take your twenty dollars for this worthless piece of junk, old man, and get out of my restaurant."

Arthur remained silent, his weathered jaw tight, his chin quivering. Julian’s condescending laughter grated against the quiet elegance of the room. He flicked a crumpled twenty-dollar bill onto the velvet wrapping, a gesture of utter contempt.

Arthur’s breath hitched as he gently caressed the exposed edge of the jade. His knuckles trembled, not from fear, but from a wounded dignity that ran deeper than any insult.

Arthur: "My great-grandfather bled in the war to protect this... it is not junk."

Julian merely rolled his eyes, swirling his scotch with haughty indifference. But as Arthur spoke, a third figure approached their table. Director Sterling, a world-renowned European museum director, stopped abruptly, his gaze fixed on the jade Arthur held. His eyes widened, pupils dilating in a moment of paralyzed shock. His champagne glass slipped from his grasp, shattering on the marble floor with a startling crash.

Director Sterling: "Merciful heavens... hands off! Don't you dare touch that bare jade with greasy fingers!"

Julian’s smug smirk froze, replaced by a look of bewildered alarm. Sterling, with a newfound urgency, pushed Julian aside and pulled out a jeweler's loupe. The jade, glowing under the chandelier, seemed to pulse with ancient energy.
