A Judge Wept When an Orphaned Teen Fought to Keep His Little Brother
Previously: After losing their parents, seventeen-year-old Landon fought a desperate courtroom custody battle to keep his little brother Timmy, facing an unexpected adversary who wanted to tear them apart forever.
The Price of Greed
Judge Edward cleared his throat, the sound echoing like a thunderclap in the quiet room. He adjusted his glasses and looked down at the thick manila folder containing the financial audit of the boys' deceased parents. "Before I make my ruling," the judge began, his voice deep and commanding, "there is a matter of the estate that must be addressed. Mrs. Sharon, would you care to explain why you filed for custody only after learning about the two-million-dollar life insurance policy?"
Landon stiffened, his embrace around Timmy tightening. He had no idea there was any money left behind. He had assumed they were completely broke, struggling to pay the rent on their tiny apartment. He looked at his aunt, whose tearful expression instantly hardened into panic. She stood up, her knuckles white as she gripped the wooden railing of the gallery.
"Your Honor, that money is meant to secure Timmy's future!" Sharon stammered, her voice rising in pitch. "Landon is just a child himself. He would squander it. I am only trying to protect my sister's legacy!"
But Judge Edward was not easily fooled. He tapped the documents in front of him. "According to the trust clause," the judge noted, "if Timmy is placed with any guardian other than Landon, eighty percent of the funds are immediately accessible to the guardian for 'administrative and living expenses' until the child turns eighteen. If Landon retains custody, the entire sum remains locked in an untouchable trust for both boys."
The truth was out. Aunt Sharon didn't want to save Timmy; she wanted to exploit a legal loophole to drain their parents' life savings. Landon felt a sickening wave of betrayal wash over him. The woman he had trusted, the aunt who was supposed to be their family, was treating his brother like a paycheck. He stared at her, his voice barely a whisper. "How could you do this to us?"
