A Little Girl Found My Deceased Wife's Polaroid—And Claimed Her Mother Was Alive
Previously: When Thomas drops a Polaroid of his late wife, a young girl insists the woman in the photo is her living mother, leading him down a dark path of secrets and survival.
The Shadow in the Doorway
Thomas’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He tried to tell himself it was a mistake, a cruel trick of resemblance, or a child's overactive imagination. But when he asked the girl her mother's name, she replied, "Elena." Then, she added a detail that shattered his reality: her mother had a crescent-shaped scar on her left wrist. It was the exact mark Sarah had carried since a childhood playground accident. There was no way a stranger could know that detail.
Unable to breathe, Thomas followed the young girl, whose name was Maya, down the narrow street to a modest brick townhouse. When Maya pushed the heavy wooden door open and called out for her mother, Thomas stood in the entryway, his hands shaking violently, caught between hope and absolute terror.
A woman stepped out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on a floral towel. Thomas gasped, clutching the doorframe for support. It was Sarah. She looked slightly older, her hair styled differently, but there was no mistaking those deep green eyes and the elegant curve of her jaw. Tears welled in Thomas's eyes as he took a trembling step forward.
"Sarah?"he breathed, reaching out to touch her arm.
But the woman only stared at him with polite confusion, taking a small step back.
"Can I help you?"she asked, her voice completely devoid of recognition. She looked at him as if he were a complete stranger. She did not know him.
Before Thomas could speak, a heavy shadow fell over the room. A man stepped out from the hallway. Thomas recognized him instantly—it was Dr. Arthur Vance, the prominent neurologist who had treated Sarah years ago, and the very man who had confirmed the details of her tragic "accident" to the police.
Arthur’s face turned deathly pale. He immediately ushered Maya and Sarah upstairs, ignoring Thomas's frantic cries. When they were alone, Arthur grabbed Thomas by the coat, his eyes wild with desperation.
"You need to leave, Thomas,"he hissed.
"She has a new life now. If you try to interfere, you will destroy her fragile mind—and I will make sure you never see her again."
