Previously: A chance encounter in a gritty tavern reveals a shocking truth: the street urchin humming a forgotten lullaby is the daughter of an aristocratic matriarch, stolen years ago.

The Unveiling

My paralysis broke. Driven by an instinct I hadn’t felt in fifteen years, I moved towards Courtney. The rough timber floorboards felt cold and alien beneath my knees as I sank into the puddle water, the shock of the cold a mere distraction from the inferno igniting within me. Water droplets splashed outward as my trembling, gloved hands reached for her. My voice, when it finally emerged, was a ragged whisper, laced with a desperation that clawed at my throat.

“Courtney… nobody outside my royal house has ever known the second verse of that lullaby.”

Her head snapped up, her dilated hazel eyes wide with a terror I recognized. She was still a child, lost and afraid, just as my own daughter had been. Her humming ceased, her trembling fingers freezing mid-air as she stared at me, the stranger in fine clothes who spoke of secrets she shouldn't know. The haunted look in her eyes spoke of a life lived in shadows, a life I had been desperate to shield her from.

Without a word, I frantically stripped off my leather glove. The cool night air hit my bare skin, but my focus was solely on the pendant I wore beneath my cashmere coat. It was a twin to the one I’d seen on her ankle, an heirloom passed down through generations. With a velocity born of years of longing and a sudden, fierce protectiveness, I pressed Courtney’s soot-covered palm against the interlocking silver heraldry. Her skin, rough and calloused, was a stark contrast to the smooth, cool metal. Her eyes widened further, a flicker of disbelief crossing her face.

“You… the kidnapper told me my mother sold me for gold.”

The words struck me like a physical blow. Sold? Sold her? The men who had orchestrated this cruel charade, who had fed her lies while I searched the globe, had finally revealed their hand. My blood ran cold, then boiled with a righteous fury. The aristocratic composure I had cultivated for years crumbled, replaced by the primal rage of a mother whose child had been stolen, manipulated, and discarded. My chest heaved, tears spilling over my cheekbones as the horrific realization of her suffering, and the depth of the betrayal, crashed down upon me.
