An Unexpected Feast

Matthew quietly waved down the diner's cashier. Pointing toward Heather's booth, he handed over his credit card. "Please send over three of your largest family combos, some milkshakes, and a birthday dessert with a candle," he instructed softly. "But don't tell them it was from me."

A few minutes later, the waitress arrived at Heather’s booth, loaded down with trays of steaming food. Heather’s eyes widened in panic as the food was laid out.

"Oh, there's been a mistake,"

she protested, her cheeks flushing red.

"We didn't order this. I can't pay for this."

The waitress smiled kindly and replied,

"It’s already been paid for, ma'am. Happy birthday to the little guy."

Heather looked around the diner, her pride warring with her desperate hunger. Her eyes locked onto Matthew, who gave her a polite nod. Instead of feeling relieved, Heather felt a wave of humiliation. She stood up, leaving the kids at the table, and walked over to Matthew.

"Excuse me,"

she said, her voice shaking.

"I appreciate the gesture, but we don't take charity. Please take it back."

Matthew stood up, his expression gentle. As he stepped into the light, Heather gasped, her defensive posture suddenly melting away. She stared at his face, her eyes searching his features.

"Matthew?"

she whispered, her voice barely audible over the diner's din.

"Is that really you?"

Matthew smiled, a look of profound recognition dawning on his own face.

"Heather? I thought it was you, but I wasn't sure. It’s been ten years."

He looked at her worn coat, then at the children, realizing that the girl he had once loved in college was now struggling just to feed her family.
