A Mother Uncovers a Daycare Worker's Lie After Her Son Screams at a Locked Gate — Part 2

Previously: When Rachel arrived at the daycare, her son Leo was screaming that his sister was locked inside. The teacher insisted the girl had already gone home, but a pink ribbon proved otherwise.

The Clue on the Gate

Rachel stared at the pink ribbon in Leo’s hand. It was the exact satin ribbon she had tied into Maya’s pigtails that very morning. If Maya had gone home with an aunt, why was her ribbon tied to the inside of a locked gate? "No, she didn't!" Leo sobbed, pulling on the ribbon. "She didn't leave! We were playing hide and seek, and Sarah locked her in!"

Rachel’s motherly instinct flared into a blinding rage. She stood up, confronting the daycare worker.

"Unlock this gate right now, Sarah,"

Rachel commanded, her voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper. Sarah backed away, her hands shaking so violently that the keys in her pocket jingled.

"I... I can't. I don't have the key to this lock. The director took it,"

she stammered.

It was a blatant lie. Rachel didn't hesitate. She pulled Leo back and kicked the wooden gate with all her might. The wood splintered, but the heavy brass lock held. She kicked it again, screaming her daughter’s name.

"Maya! Maya, can you hear me?"

From the darkness of the rear classroom, a tiny, muffled cry responded.

"Mommy? I'm scared!"

It was Maya's voice, weak and trembling. She was locked inside the dark room, left completely alone.

Rachel turned on Sarah like a lioness protecting her cub.

"Open this door, or I will tear this place apart!"

she screamed. Sarah burst into tears, dropping to her knees.

"I didn't mean to!"

she wept.

"I did the final headcount and thought everyone was gone. I locked up and set the alarm. When I realized Maya was still inside, the automatic time-lock had already engaged. I couldn't open it without triggering a police dispatch, and I... I was scared I'd lose my job! I was trying to wait for the night custodian to arrive before you got here!"
