A Mother's Desperate Plea

The air in the contemporary art gallery, perched precariously on the Cannes cliffside, was thick with tension. Outside, a storm raged, the Mediterranean Sea a furious, churning entity. Rain lashed against the panoramic floor-to-ceiling glass, mirroring the tempest within Sarah Vance. At 52, her face was a roadmap of grief, etched with sorrow that hollowed her cheeks and swollen her hazel eyes. She clutched a worn leather purse and a creased photograph, her knuckles white against the worn material. Her charcoal woolen coat, damp and frayed, offered little comfort against the chill that had nothing to do with the weather.

Across the vast, mirror-polished Calacatta marble floor, Armand Dubois, a man sculpted by arrogance and wealth, stood by the rain-streaked balcony. His raven hair was slicked back, his aristocratic jawline dusted with silver stubble. He held a crystal snifter of cognac, the amber liquid swirling as he regarded Sarah with callous amusement. Forty-six, impeccably dressed in a midnight-blue cashmere turtleneck and a bespoke charcoal blazer, he was the picture of untouchable power.

The gallery itself was a monument to minimalist design, sharp geometric shadows cast by bronze sculptures playing across the gleaming floor. Strobe flashes of coastal lightning, visible through the glass, momentarily illuminated the space, catching the polished marble and Armand’s self-satisfied smirk. Muffled thunder rumbled, a low growl against the structural glass.

Armand: "Sign the non-disclosure agreement and take the ten-million-dollar check, Madame Vance; your boy’s heart belongs to my portfolio now."

Sarah remained silent, her lips pressed firmly together, her lower eyelids brimming. Her jaw clenched, her chin quivering, fighting a wave of agony. She took a hesitant step forward, the sound of her worn shoes stark against the gallery’s hushed, expensive silence. Armand watched her, a predator observing its prey.
