Previously: In a stormy dockside tavern, a prestigious doctor mocks a rugged medic. But when the governor's son collapses, the medic's quick actions reveal a deadly secret the doctor desperately tried to hide.

Carter, incensed by Jack’s perceived defiance and the audacity of his presence, lunged forward. His intention was clear: to violently shove the ‘country doctor’ aside and assert his authority. But Jack was faster. Years spent in high-stakes environments, where split-second decisions meant the difference between life and death, had honed his reflexes to a razor’s edge. A scarred hand shot upward, intercepting Carter’s wrist with a speed that belied his rugged appearance. The impact was sickening, a bone-jarring thud that echoed in the sudden silence.

“Cyanosis, trismus, chest fasciculations. Not a stroke. Blue-ringed dock neurotoxin—and he has thirty seconds before cardiac arrest.”

Jack’s voice was low, a lethal rumble that cut through Carter’s arrogant facade. The shock in Carter’s eyes was palpable as pain shot up his trapped arm. His condescending smirk crumbled, replaced by wide-eyed, paralyzed terror. He had never encountered such raw, unshakeable authority, nor such a terrifyingly accurate diagnosis delivered with such chilling calm. The smug doctor, accustomed to deference, was utterly out of his depth. Jack released Carter’s wrist, the potent grip leaving red marks on the doctor’s pale skin. The urgency of the situation pressed down on them, heavier than the storm outside. Carter’s arrogance had nearly cost the governor’s son his life, and now, the man he so readily dismissed held all the cards.
