The wind howled like a banshee outside the old dockside tavern, a mournful sound swallowed by the violent drumming of sleet against the wire-glass skylights. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and damp wool. Amber filament bulbs cast a warm, deceptive glow across the scuffed zinc bar, reflecting in the spilled black liquid that marred its surface. Chains, rusted and heavy, hung from the timber beams overhead, swaying almost imperceptibly with the building’s shudders. It was Christmas Eve, and the world outside was a frozen, unforgiving tempest. Elena, a woman etched with the exhaustion of too many sleepless nights, stood behind the bar, her thin cotton uniform and grease-stained apron offering little protection against the chill that seeped into her bones. Her hazel eyes, shadowed with the violet hollows of relentless worry, scanned the empty tables. A small, pink pediatric oncology wristband peeked out from beneath her frayed cuff, a stark contrast to the grimy reality of her life. Her daughter, Lily, was fighting for her life, and Elena felt the weight of every unpaid bill pressing down on her. Suddenly, the heavy oak door creaked open, admitting a blast of frigid air and a man who seemed to carry the cold with him. Brock Henderson. His tailored camel-wool overcoat and the arrogant smirk beneath his slicked silver hair announced his arrival with obnoxious clarity. He took a seat at the bar, his gaze dismissive as it swept over Elena. He didn't need to speak to convey his contempt. He waved a crumpled, sodden two-dollar bill, the only currency it seemed he possessed for the holiday, and slammed it onto the counter, sending a spray of dark coffee droplets across Elena’s apron. Her breath hitched, her lower lip trembling as she fought back the tears. This was not the first time Brock had shown his cruelty, but tonight, it cut deeper. She remained silent, her jaw tight, her eyes welling with unshed tears. His sneer widened. "Here is your Christmas bonus, you pathetic beggar," he drawled, his voice dripping with condescension. "Maybe find a job you cannot completely ruin." The words, sharp and cruel, landed like blows. Elena’s world narrowed to the stinging humiliation, the sheer helplessness of her situation. Then, a low rumble cut through the tension. From the shadows of a corner booth, a massive hand shot forward, clamping onto Brock’s wrist with a force that made the air crackle. The sound of bone on bone echoed in the sudden, stunned silence.
