While the medical team stabilized Leo, Rebecca and Thomas were allowed into the room. Rebecca held Lucas close, kissing his hair, calling him their little miracle worker. Thomas, however, stood in the corner, unable to meet his son's eyes. His face was pale, not just from the scare, but from a crushing weight of shame.

An hour later, while Lucas slept on a waiting room chair, Rebecca went to retrieve Thomas's jacket from the locker. As she pulled it out, a folded legal document slipped from the inner pocket and fell to the floor. Curious, she opened it. Her breath caught in her throat.

It was a petition to rescind Lucas's legal guardianship, transferring him to a distant state boarding school. The date on the document was just two days ago.

Rebecca confronted Thomas in the empty hospital hallway, her voice trembling with rage and heartbreak.

"What is this, Thomas?" she whispered, holding up the papers. "You were going to send our son away? After everything we went through to adopt him?"

Thomas covered his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking.

"Once we got pregnant with Leo, I thought... I thought Lucas would always feel like an outsider," Thomas confessed, his voice cracking. "I convinced myself that we only had enough love, enough resources, for our biological child. I thought I was protecting Leo's future. I was going to tell you after the birth."

Rebecca looked at her husband as if he were a monster.

"He just saved your biological son's life!" she hissed. "And you wanted to discard him like trash!"

The confrontation was cut short when the doctor stepped out of the NICU, holding a clipboard with a look of utter bewilderment.
