After Shoving an Elderly Mother off the Porch, a Wife's Dark Secret is Exposed

John’s heart hammered against his ribs as he ran down the steps to pull his mother from the bushes. Eleanor was trembling, her blue blouse torn, but she seemed miraculously uninjured, shielded by the soft evergreen branches. He held her tight, his eyes darting back to Megan, who was slowly pushing herself up from the ground, gasping for air.

A Terrifying Discovery

"Get away from us, Megan!" John spat, shielding his mother. "I'm calling the police. You're going to jail for this."

Megan shook her head frantically, her voice cracked with emotion.

"John, look! Look under the porch swing!" she sobbed, coughing as she stood up. "Please, just look before you judge me!"

Sensing something genuinely terrifying in his wife's voice, John slowly turned his head. He peered onto the sunny wooden porch, focusing on the dark shadow beneath the heavy wooden swing where Eleanor had been resting.

His breath caught in his throat.

Coiled tightly near the base of the swing was a massive, thick-bodied copperhead snake. Its head was raised, triangular and menacing, its eyes locked onto the spot where Eleanor’s bare ankles had been resting just seconds before. The highly venomous viper was agitated, vibrating its tail against the wooden floorboards, ready to strike.

John felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. Eleanor was severely allergic to bee stings and insect venom; a bite from a copperhead would have been fatal to her frail heart before the ambulance could even arrive.

Megan had spotted the snake slithering out from the floorboards directly toward Eleanor's feet. With no time to yell a warning that might have caused Eleanor to freeze or step directly onto the snake, Megan had made a split-second decision. She had thrown her entire body weight into Eleanor, shoving her off the porch and out of harm's way, sacrificing herself to save her mother-in-law.
