A Face from the Past

Lieutenant Evelyn Vance stood perfectly straight in her dark green military dress uniform, her honey-blonde hair pinned back in a neat, regulation bun. Around her, the historic municipal hall echoed with the booming applause of hundreds of distinguished guests. Gold and blue spotlights swept across the grand stage, casting a warm, patriotic glow over the row of decorated officers standing at attention before the American flag. It was a day of solemn pride, a celebration of valor that Evelyn had dreamed of attending since she first commissioned. Yet, as the crowd’s cheers rose to a crescendo, Evelyn’s gaze locked onto a single figure on the stage, and the warmth in her chest turned to ice.

Her eyes traced the sharp jawline and the rigid posture of the older officer standing near the center of the stage. He was being introduced as Colonel Thomas Vance—a name that sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through her veins. But it wasn't just the name that made her breath catch in her throat. It was the faint, jagged scar running through his left eyebrow, and the familiar, deep-set gray eyes that she had only ever seen in faded photographs. To the rest of the world, this man was a highly decorated war hero receiving a prestigious commendation. To Evelyn, he was a ghost.

"It can't be," Evelyn whispered to herself, the deafening applause of the hall fading into a distant buzz. "He died ten years ago."

According to every official record she had ever read, her father, Arthur Vance, had been court-martialed for treason and had tragically passed away in an overseas prison shortly after. His disgrace had hung over Evelyn’s life like a dark shadow, fueling her own desire to join the military and clear her family's name. But as she stared at the man on the stage, she realized the military had been hiding a massive secret. The man standing there, being honored by the highest brass, was her father.
