The Critic's Cruelty

The air in the exclusive hypercar showroom crackled with the hushed reverence only the ultra-wealthy can afford. Outside, rain lashed against the towering glass walls, blurring the city’s glittering skyline into an impressionistic smear. Inside, polished obsidian floors reflected the stark, cold glare of track lighting, illuminating gleaming sports cars perched on revolving pedestals. The clinking of champagne glasses and the murmur of hushed conversations created a symphony of privilege. It was here, amidst this opulent display, that I, Courtney Sterling, held court. At 54, with cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass and eyes the color of cold graphite, I radiated an aura of venomous academic arrogance. My silver-streaked hair was pulled into an immaculate chignon, and my charcoal cashmere blazer spoke of power and discernment. I was the gatekeeper, the arbiter of taste, and tonight, I was about to make an example.

She stood out like a smudge of charcoal on silk. Grace, a girl of 22, with wide hazel eyes fringed by fluttering, damp lashes and a cascade of copper curls escaping a frayed clip. She wore an oversized, paint-spattered linen smock, stained with the vibrant hues of cobalt blue and cadmium red, over a worn cream sweater. Kneeling beside her artwork, she exuded a bruised vulnerability, yet a quiet defiance burned within her gaze. Her canvas, a riot of thick oil impasto, was meant for the elite gala. I approached, the crowd instinctively parting. Grace’s breath hitched as I reached her, her hopeful expression crumbling. Without a word, I plunged my manicured fingernails into the heart of her painting, the thick paint yielding with a sickening crunch. Then, with a violent tug, I ripped the canvas down the middle, the sound a deafening shriek that silenced the room. Grace gasped, tears instantly welling as her paint-stained fingers reached out in shattered desperation. “You have no talent, Grace,” I purred, my voice laced with icy condescension. “This worthless amateur garbage belongs in a dumpster, not an elite gala!” She remained silent, her chin quivering, tears spilling down her porcelain cheeks.
