A Wedding Interrupted by Pure Venom

The air in the historic county supreme courtroom, usually thick with legal arguments, was now heavy with the scent of lilies and the hushed excitement of an elite wedding. Sunlight streamed through the tall, arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing above rows of dark, polished wood benches. This was Clara’s day, a day I, Axel Iron, her father, had dreamt of for years. But the groom, Victoria Sterling, was a viper disguised in a bespoke velvet tuxedo.

Victoria stood at the flower-draped altar, his demeanor radiating an almost palpable arrogance. Beside him, Martha, my youngest, a boy of nineteen with a gentle spirit and a mind that processed the world differently, fidgeted. Martha is autistic, and the sensory overload of the crowded, echoing room was clearly overwhelming him. He clutched his small, hand-carved pine bird, rocking rhythmically, a silent plea for calm.

As Victoria turned, Martha’s hand, seeking comfort, brushed against the groom’s immaculate lapel. It was a fleeting, accidental touch. But Victoria recoiled as if struck by poison. His sneer deepened, his eyes flashing with a venomous, aristocratic contempt. “Keep your filthy deformed hands off my silk before I have security throw you in the kennel!” he spat, his voice dripping with disdain. Martha froze, his chin quivering, his pupils wide with paralyzed panic. He remained silent, his mouth shut tight, the wooden bird clutched in his trembling hand. From the family pew, I watched, my weathered face a mask, but my eyes, I knew, held a lethal storm gathering.
