The air in the historic county supreme courtroom, usually thick with legal arguments, now buzzed with the anticipation of a high-society wedding. Sunlight, fractured by stained-glass windows, cast dramatic shadows across the packed pews, illuminating dust motes dancing in the warm afternoon light. Amidst the whispers of silk gowns and tailored wool, stood Victoria Sterling, the groom. With his slicked-back pompadour and an immaculate ivory dinner jacket, he exuded an almost predatory arrogance. He towered over Liam Holloway, the bride’s seventeen-year-old autistic brother, who trembled in an oversized corduroy blazer, clearly distressed by the sensory overload of the event.

Suddenly, Victoria recoiled from the altar, his face contorted in disgust. With a vicious, open-handed slap, he struck Liam across the face. The sharp crack echoed through the cavernous space, silencing the crowd. Liam’s wire-rimmed glasses skittered across the polished floor as he stumbled back, his breath catching in choked sobs. Tears welled in his eyes, paralyzed by sensory terror. “Keep your filthy, twitching hands off my Italian silk, you pathetic freak!” Victoria spat, his voice laced with vitriolic contempt. Liam remained silent, his hand pressed to his crimson-welted cheek, the shock rendering him immobile.

Standing near the bar gate, Liam’s father, David Holloway, a carpenter whose hands bore the marks of decades of hard work, froze. His jaw clenched, his jugular veins throbbing. His eyes, weathered but sharp, contracted into a lethal focus as his broad shoulders squared with a silent, deadly purpose. “You shouldn’t have laid hands on my boy,” David rasped, his voice a low, menacing growl that cut through the stunned silence. Victoria, however, merely curled his lip into an arrogant smirk, oblivious to the storm brewing.
